SAILING

Sailing is a sport with open horizons – without limiting the possibilities of participants. It helps the athletes to develop a strong character as well as social skills. Sailing is an excellent outlet for people with special needs and their families, as it gives them the opportunity to develop new values, make new friends and through this, achieve self – respect, discipline and joy for life which they deserve. Through athletic participation the mentally handicapped are helped to unfold bodily, spiritually and socially. Through sailing, people with special needs adopt positive goals, join in and enjoy the challenge. Also, those who are close to them, discover a whole new world, full of love and respect.
Affiliations (Sailing) “Marathon Horizons” works together with various different social organizations, such as The Special Olympics for people with special needs. They escorted the National sailing athletes who represented Greece in the Special Olympics in Shanghai in October 2007 and won for the country a gold and a silver medal. Because of the result of their excellent collaboration they have been entrusted to organize the 2000 World Special Olympics Games in Sailing. They have also organized various seminars in co-operation with the following organizations:
- “HANDCAP CARE” ΠΒΜ ΟΑΕΔ Lakkias, Thessalonica. A sailing school for people with special needs
- “The hope of Thessalonica”. An athletic club for handicapped people
- “Happiness “ A centre for special needs people
